10 YEARS OF INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL

The International Day of the Girl represents the power of girls and highlights the commitment toward supporting their issues and equality for girls.

Plan India had led the global effort to build a coalition of support behind the Day of the Girl, securing backing from the Canadian government and taking our call all the way to the United Nations. Today, the IDG is a robust platform to rally greater opportunities for girls and awareness of the gender discrimination they endure worldwide.

Plan India will celebrate the 10th year of the IDG on 11 October by pledging to support Girls Rise High through equal access to education, health, and livelihood opportunities.

Over the past 10 years, we have worked with girls and multi-sectoral partners alike to launch actions on girls’ rights and have inspired over 100,000 girls to have a strong voice and participation in decision-making.

This year too, we will support girls to take over leadership roles and challenge stereotypes around girls and leadership.

IDG 2022 THEME: #GIRLSRISEHIGH

The focus of this year’s campaign is ‘Girls Rise High’ which will aim at inspiring young girls so that they can aspire to become the leaders of tomorrow and shape the world around them.

Girls are held back by gender inequalities, multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination, and systemic oppression that prevents them from being leaders in public life. Girls want to be part of the decisions that shape their lives. Girls know the challenges they face and the changes they need. Valuing girls and young women as actors is critical for transforming communities and shaping gender-equal societies.

National and community decision makers must support girls and young women to Rise High by making commitments to open, safe, inclusive pathways for them and their networks to have equal access to education, health, and livelihood opportunities.

Girls Rise High campaign calls for government institutions, district administration, local authorities, academic institutions, media agencies, corporates, civil society organisations, and the public to showcase their commitment to supporting girls to rise high as leaders.

IDG GIRLS TAKEOVER

A takeover is an exciting youth engagement and influencing tool where a girl or young woman is supported to take on a leadership role in a political, economic, or social space.

The takeover puts girls and young women into decision-making and leadership positions and encourages organisation/institutions to hear their views and gain insight. They are an opportunity to amplify the power of girls and showcase the commitment of the specific to support girls’ issues and equality for girls.

Takeovers present an opportunity for relevant and meaningful youth engagement and are used as a mentoring or professional development opportunity for young people, and to talk about the issues affecting girls.
