In August 2025, devastating floods struck India across Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand), Bihar, and Punjab. Triggered by intense monsoon rains and cloudbursts, these disasters caused flash floods, landslides, and overflowing rivers, submerging entire villages, destroying livelihoods, and leaving millions in crisis.
Immediate Impact:- Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand): Several villages, including Dharali, Harshil, Bagori, Sukhi, Jaspur, Jhala, Purali, and Kukhwa, were ravaged. Homes, shops, and hotels were swept away; key bridges collapsed; schools destroyed; and more than 300 families displaced.
- Bihar: More than 25 lakh people are affected across 10 districts—Patna, Bhagalpur, Munger, Begusarai, Vaishali, Bhojpur, and Khagaria among them. At least 26 lives were lost, agriculture devastated, and thousands displaced, with food security under severe threat.
- Punjab: Floods spread across 22 of 23 districts, submerging over 1,300 villages and nearly 3 lakh acres of farmland. More than 2.56 lakh people are affected; large-scale evacuations moved over 11,000 people to relief camps.
- Disrupted Education - Schools submerged, textbooks and materials lost. In Uttarkashi, schools became emergency shelters. In Bihar, floods completely halted the education system. In Punjab, many schools were damaged or are inaccessible.
- Food Crisis - Crops of paddy, maize, and vegetables destroyed in Bihar and Punjab, leaving farmers with no harvest. Nearly 3 lakh acres of standing crops were submerged and destroyed across Punjab. Uttarkashi households lost food stocks and cooking supplies, heightening malnutrition risks among children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
- Shelter Emergency - Families across all three states are left without safe shelter. In Uttarkashi, 60 Van Gujjar families are displaced. In Bihar, thousands took refuge in temporary camps. In Punjab, 77 relief camps continue to house people as ongoing rains and rising rivers continued to threaten lives.
Plan India has activated an immediate emergency response with teams on the ground conducting rapid assessments and coordinating relief efforts across Uttarkashi, Bihar, and Punjab.
We aim to support:- 10,000 families in Punjab
- 7,000 families in Bihar
- 2,000 households in Uttarkashi with nutrition and hygiene kits
- Education Kits for flood-affected school children, restoring dignity and confidence by helping them continue their learning.
- Nutrition & Hygiene Kits for the most affected households providing food, hygiene and sanitation essentials to protect families’ health.
- Dry Ration Kits & Non-Food Item (NFI) Kits - to ensure families have access to food, safe water, shelter materials, utensils and hygiene items.
- Unconditional Cash Transfers (UCTs) - to provid immediate financial support to the most vulnerable families.
