Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya

Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya "Beneficiaries under the Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya (SBSV) project in Uttarakhand."

Plan India, along with USAID and Coca-Cola India Pvt. Ltd. initiated the ‘Urban WASH – Swachh Bharat Swachh Vidyalaya’ project in 60 municipal schools and three slum areas across Dehradun, Pune and Visakhapatnam for a period of three years. One of the key outcomes of the project is to promote safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) practices in selected schools and slums.

The project aims to capacitate students, teachers, School Management Committees (SMCs), government functionaries and communities on sustainable management of WASH facilities. It is also linked to the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission, Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation and the Smart Cities Mission. Over 12,000 students and 7,000 community members were estimated to benefit through improved access to potable water, sanitation and hygiene.

The project also addresses gender equality and ensures active participation of girls and women in various activities. Additionally, replicable models are being created to further attract private sector organisations to invest and improve WASH infrastructure in schools and neighbouring communities.

There are two specific aspects of the project that lends it the innovations cutting edge. The first is the development in Hindi of the Multi-Grade Multi-Level (MGML) Teaching Module for classes 1 to 5. It was earlier available in Telegu.
