Maharajganj District (Mal Block)

Plan is operational in Nautanwa/Ratanpur, Laxmipur and Bridgemanganj blocks of Maharajganj district since 2000. The thrust of the programme is on child protection, health, education and ECCD, children's participation in governance and environment. Plan has made a valuable contribution in the development of marginalised section of the population in the backward areas of its operation in the district. The focus of the programme has been on creating awareness and sensitisation of children, parents, government and media on child rights, capacity building and strengthening of stakeholders and committees under government schemes and promoting a community-based child protection system and its effective integration into the larger structure, equipping ICDS centres and services to deliver its services, strengthening of community based health service system and mechanisms, promoting institutional deliveries, regular immunisation, home based care and nutrition. Another focus area has been promoting hygiene practices and access to safe drinking water in the community. The state office has also worked on DRR issues with special focus on fire safety in schools and children on climate change. Total population of the intervention area is 48,000 population and we are working with 2,112 sponsored children.

Key achievements

  • 1,925 expectant mothers were given proper ante-natal care for safe deliveries.
  • 2,527 children under two years of age have been fully immunised.
  • Number of children have been prevented from malnutrition is 3,500.
  • 852 drop out children including 525 girls and 327 boys were brought back to schools.
  • 735 new-borns received their birth certificate.
  • 65 children's clubs have been formed and are monitoring essential services in their communities.
  • 460 girls received MOVT and are engaged in different work.
  • 800 women have been helped to work their way out of poverty through SHGs.
  • A residential training programme called Balika Shivir was organised for 200 school going girls on life skills and child protection issues.
  • District administration of Maharajganj in UP has recognised the model school project of Plan and has decided to replicate the effort in other government schools.
  • The District Magistrate, District Officials and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) representatives acknowledged Plan's programme on JE in Maharajganj and invited in its review meeting on JE in the district.
  • 3,200 school children in Maharajganj (1,800 boys and 1,400 girls) from 30 schools have benefitted from the awareness generation campaign and health camps.
  • Highlights: 300,00 school children benefited from sports for development, Building as Learning Aid (BALA), improved school WASH, digital learning, science labs and library in schools initiatives
  • Highlights: 60,000 people benefited from 75 anaemia screening and prevention camps in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Rajasthan
  • Highlights: 40,000 school going children, particularly adolescent girls, now have access to improved WASH facilities
  • Highlights: 28,000 community members trained on various aspects of child protection
  • Highlights: 30,000 people reached out to with disaster relief during floods in Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Mumbai
  • Highlights: 34,000 women members of SHGs and joint liability groups have been trained for entrepreneurial and business skills, financial literacy and financial inclusion
