As per the Census of India 2011 (Provisional Data), the worst decadal child sex ratio (0-6 years) since independence was recorded.

As a response to this issue, Plan India has launched the Let Girls Be Born (LGBB) campaign and its main objective is to realise a gender balance in society by eliminating female foeticide/infanticide and ensuring the right to identity, name and citizenship for girls.

We aim to do this through

  • Raising social consciousness on the issue of female foeticide, its negative impact on women's health and the gender imbalance that is developing as a result of a son's preference.
  • Celebrating the birth of girls - setting up community based advocacy groups on the rights of girls.
  • Setting up of support systems for married women and families to resist social pressure.
  • Strengthening the implementation of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act by facilitating the setting up of community and civil society vigilance groups.
  • Strengthening government response mechanisms as per the provisions of the PCPNDT Act.

Plan India is currently running this campaign and project in Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand. We have further plans to expand our work to other states with low child sex ratio.
