Tsunami Responding to the calamity, Plan had initiated disaster relief and rehabilitation projects to support those affected. Two years on, life is slowly limping back to normal in the affected areas. Plan continues to focus on early childhood care and development, health and sanitation, child rights and education, livelihood opportunities, psycho social support, children's participation and disaster preparedness. The past year saw the completion of the Chandrapadi Government High School much to the delight of the children and the community. The child care centers continued to provide early care to children and met their nutritional, recreational and health needs. The Children's clubs which are an integral part of Plan programs in communities are fulfilling a vital need for sharing and support amongst children. Importantly the clubs have enabled children to voice their concerns and joys and are paving the way for children's increasing involvement in programs. To meet children's needs, a resource centre has been established in Nagapattinam where children are involved in publishing a monthly magazine and developing short video messages on key issues. As planned Child focused interventions continued during the last quarter to provide care and support. Activities include child care, children forums, psychosocial and medical support, construction of child care centers, school repairs and reconstruction. Construction of School building in Chandrabadi supported by Cushman Wakefield was completed and was inaugurated in the presence of the donor representatives. Further during the quarter two child care centers, kitchen, library were constructed. During the summer vacation an art workshop was organized 1000 children in Nagapattinam district. During the workshop children were introduced to various art skills such as painting, pottery, sculpture etc. By the end of the workshop children developed various art materials. Jammu & Kashmir Earthquake Plan’s efforts in the area have focused on interim relief and rehabilitation with children as the main focus. Plan has been providing children access to quality education care that will ensure their holistic development. This is being done through the development of “Umang” schools and “Anandshalas” or Schools of Joy.
The year saw Plan establish 250 interim relief shelters and complete the construction and establishment of nearly 350 “Umang” schools. Capacity building workshops were organized for teachers to enable them to cope with children effectively and provide them trauma counseling alongside educational concepts.
