Disaster Preparedness

In India, millions of children are affected every year by the impacts of natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and cloud bursts. Preparing children and communities to protect themselves from the affects of disaster is a key issue in our emergency work. In doing so we respond with a child-centred approach to emergencies and disasters. Plan’s resources, contacts and facilities on the ground make us well placed to respond to disasters affecting communities both in and beyond our programme areas. Therefore, Plan prioritizes its work on:

  • Building the resilience and preparedness of children, families and communities to mitigate and cope with the affects of disasters.

  • Integrating ways of reducing the risks of disasters in all Plan programmes.

  • Establishing and maintaining key partnerships with government and non-government agencies responding to natural disasters.

  • Ensuring children’s voices are heard and children have a role to play in the disaster recovery process.
